What is Pilates?
Pilates is a low-impact, mind-body method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century.
It emphasises precise, controlled movements and breathing to promote overall wellbeing while remaining kind to your joints.
Key Benefits
- Core Strength: Targets deep, dormant muscles often missed by traditional workouts that modern life neglects.
- Full-Body Conditioning: Balances the strengthening of large muscle groups with deep stretching.
- Alignment: Enhances posture and improves functional flexibility.
- Mental Focus: Challenges the connection between the mind and body through repetitive sequences.
Why is Reformer so popular?
The Reformer is a sliding carriage with adjustable springs. These springs act as a versatile tool, either adding resistance to challenge your strength or providing support to assist with specific movements.
Adaptability & Intensity
The intensity and cardiovascular demand of a session are entirely dependent on your goals and effort.
Everything is adaptable: Whether you need a high-energy challenge or a supportive, restorative flow, the practice can be tailored to meet you exactly where you are on any given day.
Wellbeing on Sea currently has Reformer carriages and some small props.
These alone still offer infinite combinations of ways to modify exercises for fitness, rehabilitation, amplify them for an athletic challenge and a bit of fun.
Beyond the Mat & Reformer
Mat and Reformer are the most well-known, however full Pilates method utilises a full suite of specialised apparatus designed to support, challenge, and align the body in different ways:
- The Cadillac (Trapeze Table): A versatile frame featuring bars, swings, and springs. It allows for acrobatic-style movements and deep, supported stretches that aren’t possible elsewhere.
- The Tower: A space-saving version of the Cadillac, offering a vertical spring system to help find length and resistance in the limbs.
- The Wunda Chair: A compact but powerful tool focused on balance, stability, and functional strength. It’s particularly effective for taxing the core and improving lower-body power.
- Other Props: including foam rollers & arc barrels are often integrated to add variety and refine your technique.
